Dr. James Arnott was born in India in 1845. After a long career in the H.E.I.C.'s Medical Service he began work on this highly regarded book, exploring the origins and branches of the Arnot/Arnott clan.

Among those branches investigated are the Arnotts of Woodmylne, Kirkconnel Hall, Chapel, Arlarie, and Forfarshire (Angus) ; plus the Arnots of Lochrig, Balcormo, Balberton, Fairney, Kilquhis, Newton, Galloway, Scotlandwell, Capildrae, Fife, Ireland and Carsegour. Notable members of the family are also examined, and there are several illustrations.
